I have had a keen interest in Enrique Serna’s fiction ever since I first read him many years ago while living in Mexico. This early collection of short stories showcases Serna’s talent for creating situations and characters with quick witty strokes, something he would continue to hone in his more mature novels later on. Also, in these stories from the early 1990s we get a glimpse of Mexican society as it transitions from post-revolutionary discontent to what would become neoliberal excesses and, eventually, breakdown. Through sardonic humor Serna creates many memorable characters with whom the reader can sympathize thanks to their follies and subsequent disillusions. While entertaining us Serna also insightfully reveals the capricious terrains of human nature.
